Does an Audiobook Count to Your Reading Goal?

Hello and welcome back!

This topic has been on my mind as of late, mostly because I’ve started using audiobooks more often. So do audiobooks really count as reading? Can I claim to have read a book if I really listened to it?

I was talking to my best friend the other day, she and I are both really busy college students and don’t have as much time to read as we’d like. So the only possibility is to listen in-between classes or in the car. She asked me one day if I thought an audiobook could count toward her Goodreads yearly reading goal.

So, here’s my opinion on the subject:

Yes. I believe it is no different from actually reading a physical book besides the format. You are taking in the same information as if you were reading. Saying an audiobook doesn’t count is the same as saying a kindle doesn’t in my opinion because it’s just a different format, you’re still hearing/reading the same story.

Some people prefer a certain format over the other, and that’s completely okay! I still prefer physical books to anything else, but an audiobook can be fun, especially if the narrator has an accent. But sometimes I’ll even read a book and listen to it at the same time. This happens mostly with the classics I read because it’s easier to get through and understand it that way.

Thanks for being here!

That’s all for now,

Isabel Kate
